How to write Amazon backend search terms
- Use words buyers search for that aren't already in your title or bullets: synonyms, other names, abbreviations, uses and who it's for.
- Write in lowercase, with single spaces between words and no commas.
- Use each word once. Amazon combines words into phrases on its own.
- Leave out brand names, ASINs, claims like “on sale” and filler words like “the” or “for”.
- Stay within 249 bytes. Accented letters count as 2 bytes or more.

Frequently asked questions
How long can Amazon backend search terms be?
On Amazon US, the Search Terms field has to stay under 250 bytes, so 249 bytes is the safe maximum. Other Amazon marketplaces can differ, so check Seller Central for yours.
What's the difference between bytes and characters?
Plain letters, numbers and spaces are 1 byte each. Accented letters like é or ü take 2 bytes and some symbols take 3 or more, so a field can be over the limit while looking shorter than 249 characters.
Should I use commas in Amazon backend keywords?
No. Separate words with single spaces. Commas and other punctuation aren't needed and use up bytes.
Should I repeat words from my title in search terms?
No. Amazon already indexes your title and bullet points, and each word only needs to appear once. Use the field for new words: synonyms, other names, abbreviations and uses.
What shouldn't go in Amazon search terms?
Other brands' names, ASINs, temporary claims like “on sale”, subjective claims like “amazing”, and offensive words. Small words like “a”, “the” and “for” aren't needed either.
What happens if I go over the limit?
Amazon may not index the search terms at all, so a field that's too long can bring you nothing. Keep it within the limit.
