How RankBuddy Writes Complete, SEO-Ready Product Listings
A complete walkthrough of how RankBuddy turns one product photo — or a listing you already have live — into a platform-tailored title, tags, description and suggested price, backed by live competitor research.
Every online seller eventually hits the same wall: the product is ready, the photos look good, and then comes the slowest part of the job — writing a title, tags and a description that a search engine and a buyer will both understand. Do it badly and the listing sits on page 20 where nobody sees it. RankBuddy exists to remove that wall, in two ways. Upload a product photo and choose the marketplace you sell on, and it returns a complete, ready-to-paste listing written for that specific platform and informed by what is ranking for similar products right now. Or, if you already have a listing live somewhere, paste it in instead — no photo required — and RankBuddy rewrites it into a stronger, more searchable version while keeping every fact you gave it exactly as you wrote it.
This is page 1 of a 10-page guide. Here we explain exactly what RankBuddy does, step by step, so you know what is happening behind the button. The pages that follow go deep on SEO for Etsy, Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Shopify and other marketplaces, on keyword research tools, and on writing titles, tags and descriptions by hand — because the more you understand the craft, the better you can use any tool, including ours.
The problem: listing SEO is slow and easy to get wrong
Marketplace search works by matching what a buyer types against the words in your listing. That sounds simple, but the details are unforgiving. A title that reads beautifully to a human can miss the exact phrase buyers search for. Tags that repeat the same word waste limited slots. A description written once and pasted everywhere ignores the fact that Etsy, Amazon, eBay and Shopify each use different fields and reward different structures.
Most sellers are not SEO specialists, and they should not have to be. But they still compete with sellers who are. RankBuddy narrows that gap by doing the repetitive analytical work — identifying the niche, checking what competitors use, and formatting the result for the platform — in seconds instead of an hour per product.
How RankBuddy works, step by step
- Upload a product photo (or switch to Optimize an Existing Listing and paste your current title, description and tags instead — a photo is optional there). A clear, well-lit photo works best. RankBuddy reads the image with AI vision to understand what the product actually is, instead of relying on a filename.
- Pick your platform. Choose Etsy, Amazon, eBay, Shopify or Walmart, or type the name of any other marketplace or your own store. The platform decides which fields are written and how.
- Answer a clarifying question if asked. RankBuddy tries to work out whether your product is a physical item or a digital download, and its color, from the photo alone. It only asks — at most two quick multiple-choice questions — when that is genuinely unclear. Most of the time it skips this step entirely.
- Category detection and a legality check. RankBuddy names the specific niche your product belongs to, for example handmade beaded gemstone jewelry rather than just jewelry, and checks the photo isn't using a trademarked character or brand before writing anything.
- Live competitor research, matched to your design. RankBuddy searches for that niche on the platform you chose, keeps only listings that are genuinely the same kind of product (a digital pattern is never compared against a physical item), and ranks them by how closely they match your design and how well they're actually selling — see the section below for exactly how.
- Platform-tailored writing, then a review pass. The AI writes the listing using your photo, your answers and the research, then re-reads its own first draft against the same competitors and tightens any weak wording before showing it to you.
- Review, edit and copy. Every field appears in an editable box with its own Copy button, alongside a suggested price and the keywords behind the listing. Adjust anything, then paste it into your marketplace.
What you get for each platform
A generic description is not a listing. Each marketplace has its own fields, so the output changes with the platform you pick:
- Etsy: SEO title, tags, description, and materials and attributes.
- Amazon: title, bullet points, description and backend search terms.
- eBay: title, item specifics, description and a suggested category.
- Shopify: product title, meta description, product description and image alt text.
- Walmart: title, key features, description and specifications.
- Any other platform: title, keyword list and description, written for the platform name you type.
How the competitor research works
Competitor research is included on every plan, free or paid. After identifying your product niche, RankBuddy runs several live web searches restricted to the platform you selected where possible — the specific design first, then its color and style, then the broader category, and a search for that niche's bestsellers. Every candidate listing is then scored for how closely it matches your exact design, and results of the wrong kind are dropped: a digital pattern is never compared against a physical item, or the other way round, and listings that look sold out, closed or long-dead are filtered out too.
From what's left, RankBuddy keeps the five listings that best combine a close design match with real signs of selling well — review counts, ratings, and badges like Bestseller or Popular Now where the search results show them. You see each one's store name (when it's visible), its listing title with the phrases worth noticing underlined, and five keywords it targets — 25 keywords in total, feeding both your tags and a suggested starting price for your own listing.
It is important to be honest about what this is and is not. This is live search-result research, not private sales or search-volume data from inside the marketplace. Nobody outside a marketplace has that — so "selling well" here is a signal built from public reviews and badges, not an exact sales figure, and the suggested price is a starting point, not a guarantee. What you get is a fast, current view of how the winning listings are worded and priced — which is exactly what you would collect by hand if you had an hour to spare.
Already have a listing? Optimize it instead
Image to SEO is for a brand-new listing, but plenty of sellers already have one live somewhere and just want it to rank better. For that, switch to the Optimize an Existing Listing tab and paste in what you already have — your current title, description, tags and price, and a photo if you'd like to add one, though it's optional here. RankBuddy runs the same live competitor research on it, keeps every fact you gave it exactly as written (materials, sizes, features, brand — nothing is invented or removed), and rewrites the wording to close the gap with what's currently ranking: fixing generic or repeated phrasing, filling in the keywords your listing is missing, and returning it in the same platform-specific fields as a new listing.
Keywords and sharing on Standard and Premium
Standard and Premium subscribers get a With Keywords section on every result: a clean list of search phrases and terms that are showing up for your product's niche, built from related searches and the most frequent competitor terms. These plans can also switch on a public, read-only share link for any saved listing and turn it off again at any time, which is handy for sending a draft to a teammate or client.
Tokens, free usage and plans
- One complete listing costs 10 tokens.
- Guests get 10 free tokens a day. Signing in with Google raises that to 30 free tokens a day, which is three listings, and unlocks your saved listing history.
- Paid plans add monthly tokens, bulk upload for processing many photos at once, and longer history: Basic keeps listings 7 days, Standard 15 days and Premium 30 days.
- Top-up token packs are available on paid plans if you need more in a month.
You never need a credit card to try RankBuddy. The free daily tokens are there so you can judge the output on your own products before deciding anything.
A worked example
Imagine you sell hand-poured soy candles on Etsy and you have just photographed a new lavender and cedar jar. You upload the photo and choose Etsy. RankBuddy recognises a scented soy candle in a glass jar and identifies the niche as handmade soy wax scented candles — clear enough from the photo that it doesn't need to ask you anything. It then finds the five closest-matching, best-selling soy candle listings on Etsy right now, notices that they lean on phrases like soy candle, lavender, gift for her and self care, and writes a title that leads with your main phrase, thirteen distinct tags, a description that opens with what the buyer gets, and a suggested price based on what those listings charge. Total time: about 20-25 seconds, and you still get to edit every word.
How to get the best results
- Use a sharp photo of the product on its own. Clutter and heavy filters make it harder to identify materials and style.
- Add a working name if the app offers a field for it. A short name like beaded gemstone necklace anchors the result.
- If you already have a listing live, paste as much of it as you can into Optimize an Existing Listing — the more RankBuddy has to work with, the more it can strengthen without guessing.
- Answer any clarifying question honestly. It only ever asks about physical-vs-digital or color, and only when the photo genuinely doesn't settle it — so a wrong answer there is the one thing that can throw off the whole listing.
- Read the result once, out loud. Fix anything the photo didn't actually show — a bracketed placeholder for finished size, page count or similar — before publishing.
- Regenerate only when needed. Each generation uses tokens, so refine the fields by hand first.
What RankBuddy does not do
- It cannot guarantee rankings or sales. Search results depend on many things beyond the text, including photos, price, reviews, shipping speed and the marketplace's own algorithm.
- It does not publish to your shop. You copy the fields into your marketplace yourself, so you stay in control.
- It does not see private marketplace data such as your shop's analytics or exact search volumes.
- It is a drafting tool. You are responsible for checking that every claim in a listing is accurate.
