eBay SEO: Titles, Item Specifics and Research That Get Listings Found
How eBay's search works, how to write an 80-character title, why item specifics matter, and how to research keywords with eBay's own tools and free methods.
eBay is different from Etsy and Amazon in one important way: it sells a huge mix of new, used, rare and everyday items, and buyers often search with very specific words such as a model number, brand or condition. That makes eBay one of the platforms where precise, accurate titles and item specifics matter most. This page explains how eBay search works, how to build a strong title inside a tight character limit, why item specifics are effectively keywords, and how to research what buyers search for.
How eBay search works
eBay's search engine is commonly called Cassini, and its default results order is Best Match. eBay does not reveal the formula, but its seller guidance and years of seller experience agree on the main ingredients: how well the listing matches the query, how complete and accurate the item information is, the listing's sales and engagement history, price including shipping, seller performance and, for many categories, how quickly the item can be delivered. Titles and item specifics carry most of the matching power.
Where keywords go on an eBay listing
- Title: limited to 80 characters. This is the most valuable text on the listing, so every character should carry information.
- Item specifics: structured fields such as brand, model, size, colour, material and condition. Buyers filter by them, and eBay uses them to match searches, so fill in every relevant one.
- Category: pick the most specific category. Listing in a wrong category hides the item from filtered browsing.
- Description: supports conversion and answers buyer questions. It is less influential for search than the title and item specifics.
- Photos: eBay allows up to 24 photos on many listings. Use them to show condition and detail.
Writing an 80-character eBay title
With only 80 characters, you are choosing which words deserve a place. A dependable formula is: brand, then product name or model, then the key attributes that buyers search by, then condition or set details when relevant.
- Start with the brand and model or exact product name if it has one.
- Add the attributes buyers search for: size, colour, capacity, material or compatibility.
- Add condition words only when they are true and useful, such as new, refurbished or sealed.
- Avoid filler and symbols such as amazing, look or wow. They use up limited space and do not match searches.
- Use every character you reasonably can, but do not stuff unrelated words. eBay policy prohibits keyword spamming.
For example: Levi's 501 Original Fit Jeans Men's 32x32 Blue Straight Leg Button Fly Denim. It names the brand and model, then size, colour, fit and material in the order buyers scan.
Why item specifics matter so much
Item specifics are eBay's structured way of describing a product. When a buyer filters a category by brand, size or colour, only listings with the matching item specifics are shown. Missing specifics therefore means missing traffic, no matter how good the title is. Fill in every specific eBay offers for your category, and where the field allows custom values, use the exact wording buyers would use.
How to research eBay keywords
1. Search suggestions
Type your product into eBay's search bar and note the suggested completions. Try adding a brand, size or condition after the product name to reveal more specific searches.
2. Sold listings
Search your product and filter the results to Sold items. Sold listings show what actually sold, the price it sold for and how those sellers worded their titles. This is one of the best free sources of keyword and pricing evidence on any marketplace.
3. Terapeak product research
eBay's Seller Hub includes Terapeak product research, which shows sales trends, average selling prices and sell-through data for products, based on eBay's own marketplace data. It helps you decide which products and keywords have real demand.
4. Competitor listings
Open the top few Best Match results and look at their titles and item specifics. Repeated terms across several successful sellers are usually terms buyers use.
5. Google and other tools
Google autocomplete and related searches help you find alternate names and model numbers. General keyword tools covered on page 8 can add more variations.
Signals beyond keywords on eBay
- Seller performance: low defect rates, reliable dispatch and good feedback improve visibility.
- Price and shipping: eBay compares total cost, and free or fast shipping often helps conversion.
- Returns: offering returns can increase buyer confidence.
- Promoted Listings: optional paid promotion can boost visibility for a fee. Organic SEO still determines how relevant you are when the promotion ends.
- Accurate condition: honest descriptions reduce returns and protect your rating.
How RankBuddy helps with eBay
Choose eBay in RankBuddy and you receive a title, a suggested set of item specifics as name and value pairs, a description and a suggested category. RankBuddy studies the photo to work out what the product is, checks how top eBay results describe similar items, and drafts the fields accordingly. Since eBay's title limit and item specifics are strict and depend on the category, always verify each value against your actual item and eBay's current requirements before you publish. This is especially important for brand, model, size and condition. Got an eBay listing already live and underperforming? Paste it into Optimize an Existing Listing instead of rebuilding it from a photo — RankBuddy keeps every fact and strengthens the wording and keywords around it.
Common eBay SEO mistakes
- Leaving item specifics empty or filling them with placeholders.
- Using exclamation marks and filler words instead of searchable terms.
- Placing the item in a broad or incorrect category.
- Hiding condition problems. It leads to returns and hurts seller metrics.
- Using another brand's name to attract searches. This breaks eBay policy and can get listings removed.
