SEO for Other Marketplaces: Poshmark, Depop, Mercari, Redbubble and More
How to write searchable listings on smaller and niche marketplaces such as Poshmark, Depop, Mercari, Redbubble, Faire and your own store, using one repeatable method.
Etsy, Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Shopify get most of the attention, but many sellers earn a large share of their income elsewhere: reselling fashion on Poshmark, Depop or Mercari, selling designs on Redbubble or Society6, wholesaling on Faire, or running a niche store of their own. Each platform has its own audience and its own search behaviour, yet the underlying method for getting found is remarkably similar. This page gives you that method, then notes what is different on several popular platforms.
The universal method for any marketplace
Every marketplace search box does the same basic job: it matches words a buyer types against words in your listing, then orders the matches. So the same four steps work everywhere.
- Find the buyer's words. Use the platform's search suggestions, the top listings and Google to collect the exact phrases people use for your product.
- Put the strongest phrase first. Titles are almost always the heaviest field, and the first words are the most visible.
- Fill every field the platform gives you. Categories, tags, hashtags, brand, size, colour and condition are all searchable or filterable.
- Make it true and readable. Buyers convert on clear, honest listings, and conversion feeds ranking on nearly every platform.
Poshmark
Poshmark shoppers browse and filter by category, brand, size and colour, and search by keywords. Write a title that includes the brand, item type, style and size where relevant, for example Free People Boho Floral Maxi Dress Size M. Fill in brand, size, colour and category precisely, because most shoppers filter first and read second. In the description, mention condition, measurements and fit. Sharing listings and engaging with the community also affect how often you appear, so consistent activity helps alongside good keywords.
Depop
Depop's audience is style-driven and searches by aesthetic and era terms as much as by product type, such as vintage, Y2K, streetwear or cottagecore. Use those style words in the description and hashtags, where they truly describe the item, along with the brand, item type and size. Clear, well-styled photos matter a great deal on Depop. Tags and hashtags should be relevant and limited to accurate terms rather than long unrelated lists.
Mercari
Mercari focuses on quick, everyday secondhand and new goods. Buyers search for brand, model and condition. Use a title with brand, product name, model and key attributes, complete the category and condition fields, and price competitively after checking sold listings for the same item. Include accurate details about flaws, which builds trust and reduces returns.
Redbubble, Society6 and print-on-demand
On print-on-demand sites you upload one design that appears on many products, so your title, tags and description describe the design and its themes rather than a physical item. Buyers search by subject and interest, such as retro sunset poster, funny cat lover gift or minimalist mountain art. Write a descriptive title, use all the tag slots for varied but accurate search phrases, and describe the theme, style and ideal recipient. Because the platforms host millions of designs, specific niches beat broad ones, so a design about hiking in a particular region will usually be found more easily than one labelled simply nature.
Faire and wholesale marketplaces
Wholesale buyers are shop owners looking for products that will sell in their stores. Titles should be clear and professional, and descriptions should cover materials, dimensions, minimum order quantities and what makes the product distinct. Category and attribute fields help retailers filter by style, price and values such as handmade. Clean product photos and consistent branding build the confidence buyers need to place larger orders.
Your own store or website
If you sell through your own site on a platform such as WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Squarespace or Wix, the principles from the Shopify page apply: a unique page title of about 60 characters, a meta description of about 150 to 160 characters, descriptive URLs, alt text, fast pages and helpful content. Google is the main source of free traffic, so keyword research uses Google's suggestions, search results and tools like Search Console.
Off-platform traffic that supports every listing
- Pinterest: visual search that works well for home, fashion, food, craft and gift products. Well-described pins can send steady traffic for months.
- Google Shopping free listings: eligible product feeds can appear in Google's shopping results at no cost.
- Social media: consistent posts with clear product names and relevant hashtags help buyers discover your shop.
- Email: collect emails from customers so you can tell them about new products without depending on any single platform's algorithm.
Selling on several platforms at once
Listing the same product on several marketplaces multiplies your reach, but do not paste identical text everywhere. Each platform has different fields, character limits and search habits, and duplicated text can be less effective. Write for each platform separately, keep pricing, stock and product details consistent across them, and check each platform's rules about listing the same item elsewhere.
How RankBuddy helps with any platform
RankBuddy's platform list includes an Other option where you type the name of any marketplace or your own store. RankBuddy then writes a title, a keyword list and a description tailored to that platform's style, based on your photo and on live research into how comparable products are described. It is a fast way to create a solid first draft for a platform without a dedicated template, which you can then adjust to that platform's fields. If you already have a listing on that platform, Optimize an Existing Listing works the same way in reverse: paste in your current title, description and tags, name the platform, and get a stronger version back with no photo needed. Bulk upload on paid plans lets you prepare many products for several channels quickly.
Now that you have the method for every platform, the next page compares the keyword research tools that can make step one faster.
