The E-commerce SEO Checklist and Answers to Common Questions
A complete checklist for optimising every product listing, a monthly maintenance routine, and clear answers to the most common e-commerce SEO questions sellers ask.
You have reached the last page of this guide. Over the previous nine pages we covered how RankBuddy works, SEO for Etsy, Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Shopify and other marketplaces, the tools for keyword research, and how to write titles, tags and descriptions. This page turns all of it into a practical checklist you can use for every new listing, a routine for keeping listings healthy, and answers to the questions we hear most often.
The listing checklist
Before you write
- Decide exactly what the product is and who it is for.
- Collect five to ten real search phrases from the platform's suggestions, top listings and Google.
- Choose one primary phrase, three to five secondary phrases and some long-tail variants.
- Check the top listings for how they are worded, priced and photographed.
Title
- Starts with the primary phrase in words a buyer would type.
- Includes the key attributes: size, colour, material, brand or model as relevant.
- Reads naturally, without repeated words or filler.
- Follows the platform's length and style rules.
Tags, keywords and attributes
- Every tag or keyword slot is used with a true, distinct phrase.
- Synonyms, occasions, recipients and styles are covered.
- Category is as specific as possible.
- Every relevant attribute or item specific is filled in.
Description and bullets
- The opening lines say what the product is and who it is for.
- Materials, dimensions, care and what is included are listed.
- Bullets lead with benefits and answer common questions.
- Shipping, production time and returns are clear.
- The text is original, and every claim is accurate.
Photos and trust
- The first image is clear and shows the product well at thumbnail size.
- Extra images show scale, detail, use and what is in the box.
- Alt text is added where the platform supports it.
- Price and shipping are competitive for the market.
A monthly maintenance routine
- Review your top ten listings. Note views, clicks and sales.
- Find listings with many views but few sales, and improve the photos, price or title.
- Find listings with few views, and test a different primary phrase or new tags.
- Refresh seasonal keywords a month or two before the season starts.
- Check new competitors and pricing in your main niches.
- Re-read platform rules for changes to titles, categories or prohibited content.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to see results from SEO?
On marketplaces, changes to titles and tags can show an effect within days or weeks as your listing is re-indexed, but consistent gains usually build over one to three months as the listing earns clicks and sales. On your own website, Google can take several weeks to a few months to reflect changes, and competitive phrases take longer. Be patient and change one thing at a time.
Can any tool guarantee a top ranking?
No. Rankings depend on the platform's algorithm, competition, your product, price, photos, reviews and shipping, and the algorithms change. Be sceptical of anyone promising guaranteed page one results. What good SEO does is remove avoidable obstacles so that your listing can compete fairly.
How many keywords should a listing have?
Focus on one primary phrase and a few secondary ones, then fill the tag or keyword slots with related phrases. More is not always better: every keyword must accurately describe the product. On platforms with a tag limit, use all the slots. On others, prioritise clear, readable text.
Should I use the same listing on every marketplace?
Write a separate version for each platform. Fields, limits and search habits differ, and platform-specific wording performs better than identical copy. Keep the facts — price, stock, materials and dimensions — consistent.
Is AI-written listing text safe to use?
AI can produce a strong first draft quickly, but you are responsible for what you publish. Check every claim, size, material and brand reference against your real product, edit the wording so that it sounds like you, and make sure the text follows the platform's policies.
How is RankBuddy different from a keyword tool?
A keyword tool gives you data about phrases. RankBuddy takes a photo of your product (or your current listing text, if you already have one live), researches live results for its niche, and writes the platform-ready title, tags, description and a suggested price for you, in one step. It is best used as a fast starting draft alongside your own judgement, and you can still pair it with a volume tool if you want deeper numbers.
Can I use RankBuddy on a listing I already have live?
Yes. Switch to the Optimize an Existing Listing tab and paste in your current title, description, tags and price — a photo is optional there. RankBuddy runs the same live competitor research as a brand-new listing, keeps every fact you gave it exactly as written, and rewrites the wording to close the gap with what's currently ranking. It's the better starting point when a listing already exists and just isn't pulling its weight.
Where does the competitor research come from?
RankBuddy searches the web live for your product's niche, restricted to the platform you chose where possible, and studies the top results. It does not use private marketplace data such as exact search volumes or sales figures, which are not available to outsiders.
What does RankBuddy cost?
You can try it free: 10 tokens a day as a guest, 30 a day when signed in with Google, and one listing costs 10 tokens. Paid plans add monthly tokens, bulk upload and longer history, and Standard and Premium add public share links and the With Keywords section. See the pricing page for current plans.
Do I need a credit card to start?
No. You can generate listings on the free daily tokens without entering any payment details.
Your next step
Pick one product, run through the checklist above, and publish. Then improve one listing each week using what you have learned in this guide. Small, steady improvements to titles, tags, photos and descriptions add up to real organic traffic. When you want a fast, research-backed first draft for any platform, upload a product photo to RankBuddy — or, for a listing you already have live, paste it into Optimize an Existing Listing — and try it for free.
