How to Write Product Titles, Tags and Descriptions That Rank and Convert
A step-by-step method for writing product titles, tags, bullets and descriptions that rank in marketplace search and persuade buyers, plus how to analyse competitors without copying them.
Keywords get you into the search results, but the words on your listing decide whether the shopper clicks, reads and buys. Good listing copy does two jobs at once: it matches what people search, and it answers what people wonder. This page gives you a repeatable method for titles, tags, bullets and descriptions that works on any platform, and shows how to study competitors in a way that improves your listing without copying anyone.
The three questions every listing must answer
- What is it? The product name and type, in the words buyers use.
- Is it right for me? Size, material, colour, compatibility, style or occasion.
- Why should I trust it and buy it here? Quality, condition, shipping, guarantees and photos.
Search engines answer the first question with the title and tags. Shoppers answer the second and third by scanning your bullets, description, photos and reviews. A strong listing covers all three.
Writing the title
A formula you can adapt
Primary keyword phrase, then the most important attributes, then a secondary phrase or use case. Adjust for each platform's limit. On Etsy, that could be Lavender Cedar Soy Candle, Handmade Scented Candle, Gift for Her. On eBay, with 80 characters, it becomes brand, model, key attributes and condition. On Amazon, it usually starts with the brand.
Title do's
- Lead with the phrase a buyer would actually type.
- Use natural, readable phrases rather than a pile of loose words.
- Include the attributes buyers filter by, such as size, colour or material.
- Check your platform's rules for capitalisation, symbols and prohibited words.
Title don'ts
- Do not repeat the same keyword many times.
- Do not add unrelated popular terms to catch traffic. It attracts the wrong buyers and can breach policy.
- Do not use claims you cannot prove, such as best, number one or guaranteed.
- Do not use another brand's name unless you genuinely sell that brand.
Choosing tags and keyword fields
Tags, hashtags and backend keyword fields exist to catch searches your title cannot cover. Use them for synonyms, alternate spellings, recipients, occasions, styles and use cases. Prefer multi-word phrases, because buyers search in phrases. Use every available slot on platforms that count tags, and make sure each one is true of the product. If you sell a walnut wood cutting board, the tags might include walnut cutting board, wooden chopping block, housewarming gift, kitchen decor and personalised serving board, each covering a different search idea.
Writing bullets and key features
- One idea per bullet, starting with the benefit, then the detail.
- Put the most important facts first: what it is made of, what size it is, what is included.
- Use plain words. Shoppers skim, so short lines beat long paragraphs.
- Turn features into outcomes. Instead of 6mm thick, say cushions joints during floor exercises.
- Answer common questions before they are asked, such as whether something is dishwasher safe or comes assembled.
Writing the description
- Open with one or two clear sentences that say what the product is and who it is for, using your primary phrase naturally.
- Follow with the benefits and the story behind the product, if it helps the buyer decide.
- List the practical details: materials, dimensions, weight, colours, care and what is in the box.
- Add shipping, production time and return information.
- Close with a short reassurance or invitation to message you with questions.
Break long descriptions into short paragraphs with headings or line breaks where the platform allows. Write original text for every product, since duplicated or manufacturer-supplied descriptions can be filtered out or treated as low quality.
Analysing competitors the smart way
Competitor analysis is about learning the market's language and finding gaps, not about copying. Pick three to five strong listings for the same kind of product and compare them side by side.
What to look at
- Title structure: which phrase leads, and which attributes appear.
- Shared terms: words that recur across several top listings.
- Tags and attributes: what they use and what they leave out.
- Price, shipping and delivery times.
- Photos: how many, what angles, whether they show scale and use.
- Reviews: what customers praise and complain about.
How to use what you find
- Adopt shared terms that truly describe your product.
- Look for a gap, such as a use case, size or audience that competitors ignore, and lead with it.
- Fix what customers complain about in competing reviews by addressing it in your bullets and photos.
- Write in your own words. Copying text can breach platform rules and hurts your credibility.
How RankBuddy does this for you
RankBuddy runs a competitor step on every listing: it finds the five live results closest to your exact design and best-selling for that niche, shows you who they are, their listing titles with the key phrases underlined, and which terms they use, then mixes the strongest shared phrases with what makes your product different into a new title — never copying any one competitor's wording. You see the full competitor list alongside your result, so you can check the work. Standard and Premium plans add a With Keywords list of search phrases for the niche. The same process runs if you paste in a listing you already have live under Optimize an Existing Listing, instead of starting from a photo. As with any tool, treat the output as a strong draft, and edit it so that it is accurate and sounds like your brand.
Test, measure and improve
- Change one thing at a time, such as the title's opening phrase, so you can see what worked.
- Give a change a few weeks before judging it, because search results take time to settle.
- Watch views, click-through rate and conversion. Many views with few sales suggest a mismatch between keywords and product, or a price or photo problem.
- Refresh your best sellers seasonally with updated keywords.
The final page pulls everything together in a checklist you can use for every new listing, plus answers to the questions sellers ask most.
